Music and Theology (Book)
Don E. Saliers, Author.  Nashville, TN: Abingdon Press, 2007.

Don Saliers's intention in writing Music and Theology was to answer the question: "How might theological discourse require music for its realization, and why do many forms of music evoke religious awareness that calls for theological interpretation?" In this text he examines the intersections between the abstractions of language and the sensuality of music.

Saliers first discusses the role of sound in our experience of the world. He then considers the centuries-old debate about the appropriate formation and expression of Christian faith in language (as in the Word of God) and in the more sensual form of music. As he writes, "Theological views of music turn on where and how the boundaries between the material and spiritual worlds are drawn."

In one chapter he focuses on hymns, exploring them in light of how they reveal the changes in sensibility and theological meaning that have occurred in the Christian faith over the centuries. In another chapter he considers singing, identifying it as both a theological and sociopolitical act, citing its role in efforts to achieve freedom, peace, and justice.

A later chapter explores the tension that exists between so-called "sacred" and "secular" music and how this distinction colors views of music that carries religious import. The final chapter reflects on musical/theological encounters with what is holy

This book would be of value to anyone seeking insight into the powerful and ever-changing intersections between Christian theology and Christian music.
